Hillsdale Public Library Board of Trustees invited fourteen members of
the community to come together to develop a five year Plan of Service for
the library. One of their goals was to increase available space.
Objectives envisioned were: Assess potential needs; Develop building funds
and resources; Select an architect; Develop a promotional plan; Select a
contractor; Begin construction. |

Library hired Patience Kenney Jackson, a library building consultant
specializing in identifying library needs who has been employed since 1988
by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners in Boston. |

Carol Briggs and Patience Kenney Jackson worked together to create a
Building Program which was based on public feedback, existing space use,
circulation, and projected future use. A compilation of data helped
identify more exact requirements for the library's expansion, in part
using a square-footage-per-capita formula that helps estimate accurate
projection for space use. |

Library located a number of architecture firms, reviewed their
experience and qualifications, and interviewed those with appropriate
experience and qualifications. |

Library formed a Building Committee consisting of members of the Board
of Trustees, Friends of the Library, and the community to pursue expanded
facilities |

Library hired Best Joslin Architects from Windsor, CT, for initial
phase of project, which includes working with Building Committee to
investigate current and alternative building sites, permitting, zoning,
fundraising, public outreach, and budgeting |

Building Committee and architect investigated existing site for
expansion capabilities, as well as many additional building sites in the
library's service area. |

The Regents of the University
of the State of
New
York
granted an amendment to the library's charter to expand the service area
to include the towns of Hillsdale, Copake and Ancram.
The library’s name was changed to Roeliff Jansen Community
Library.

Hired Clark Engineering &
Surveying, P. C.
New Lebanon, NY, and Best Joslin Architects, Windsor, CT, to inspect
and report on the feasibility of purchasing the Mount Washington House
in Hillsdale for library use. |

Signed contract with Best Joslin Architects for
Phase 2/Schematic Design. |

2006 |
Signed contract with Financial Development Agency of
Amherst, MA, to conduct a feasibility study. When the feasibility
study results were positive, FDA was retained to conduct a capital
campaign. |
