The Hillsdale Public Library is located on State Route 23, just west of the major intersection with Route 22, in the enter of town.  Across Route 23 is  a popular grocery store.  Although actually constructed in 1925, the library building appears as a traditional nineteenth-century one-story brick building.  The library is chartered by the State of New York as the Hillsdale Library, an association library to serve the town of Hillsdale.  It also serves the towns of Copake and Ancram.  Trustees are self-perpetuating and appointed by the Board from the Association membership.

Tax support for the library from the governments of the three townships totaled 22.8% of the FY2001 operating budget.

Fifty percent of the 2001 budget of $64,375 was funded by an annual Fund Drive and a further $7,000, 0r 11% was derived from income on investments and endowment.

A total budget of $64,375 for FY2001 would represent an overall expenditure for library services of $9.85 per capita for the year.

The library has 1,844 registered borrowers.  Circulation for the year 2001 is reported as 20,296 items, an increase of 52% from 13,349 in the eight years since 1993.   (In 2004 the number of registered borrowers increased by 39% to 2,567.)

In spite of the fact that the library has no meeting room or story hour room, it offers a series of seasonal preschool story hours and craft programs, along with occasional adult programs.
