Mae and Evelyn Niver Scrapbook
Mae and Evelyn Niver lived in Craryville until their deaths in the 1970's. They are buried in Craryville. They were cousins of James A Luedke Jr. who donated this scrapbook. A modest sized but thick scrapbook of newspaper clippings of
weddings, births and deaths, mostly Hillsdale, Copake and vicinity. Taken from Hudson and/or other local newspapers,
with the year of each clipping identified in writing, spanning 1915 to
about 1937.
Barber, Gertrude A.: Gravestone Inscriptions
Compiled between 1935 and 1941. Dedicated almost exclusively to community
and church cemeteries. Records are known to contain errors.
We have selected pages from Vol. 7, 8 & 9.
Divine, A. L.: Columbia
County, NY Gravestone Inscriptions - a full name index showing about 80,000 individuals with location of
gravesite in Columbia County prior to 20th century.
Excerpt from a letter by
author, Albert Divine:
"I was tracing a local Hillsdale genealogy for a local resident and at the
time, I came across a rather intriguing item--most of that information which had
burned in the Courthouse--was in fact not lost. Much of the information
for Canaan, Austerlitz and Hillsdale/Copake either was not there in the first
place (it is at Albany), or was very nearly (conjecture), duplicated at the
Courthouse in Pittsfield, MA. Getting stumped in my Columbia County
searches lead me to MA, and what a gold mine of Columbia County history I found
in the Land Deeds. Eastern Columbia County was for many years considered
part of MA (Berkshire County) but the records of NY in MA, continue long after
the settlement of the Border Dispute. Land deeds, for example, continue
until about 1820 in Pittsfield Land deeds. This assemblage of NY documents
is a vital source."
