Serving Ancram, Copake, and Hillsdale, New York

The New Library Building

The proposed 7,500-square-foot building will be a one-story, environmentally conscientious project built on 9+ acres on Route 22, just north of the old Roe Jan School. The space will be filled with natural light and provide westward views toward the Audubon and other preservation lands.

We are very happy to have been accepted into the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) new construction program that supports “green” building. Your new library will be built using local materials and blend into the gorgeous landscape of Columbia County.

The structure will be built low on the site, conforming to Copake's Scenic Corridor Overlay Zoning. The new facility will have space for a collection of up to 40,000 items, with state-of-the-art computers and room for children to read and play. There will be a community room that can be opened independently of the library and plenty of space for picnicking and myriad other outdoor activities. The new facility will give residents of Ancram, Copake, and Hillsdale a true community library to enjoy for generations to come. This dream is not so distant; it is within our grasp!

Your new 7,500 sq. ft library will include:

  • Room for quiet study and literacy and educational programs

  • Nearly 1,500 square feet of space for children to read, play, and attend story programs

  • Up-to-date technology and more computers for children and adults

  • Complete accessibility for those with disabilities

  • Public restroom facilities and a centrally air conditioned space

  • Our current collection, with room to grow

  • Display areas for the work of local artists and for our now stored relics of local history

  • Room for our large community of dedicated volunteers to work

  • An outdoor patio area for outdoor performances, tent sales, and other events

  • Space for library administrative offices

  • Room for friends to sit and chat while looking out onto our spectacular countryside

  • A community room, that can be open independently of the library, for educational and cultural events

  • Space for picnicking and myriad other outdoor activities

  • A refuge for reading and socializing in the cold of winter

Expanded Collections:

  • Capacity for 20,000 more books, periodicals, and other materials

  • Enhanced reference, business, and skills-development collections

  • Expanded audio-visual collections including CDs and DVDs

  • Community information bulletin boards

Your new library will be a beautiful and functional “green” building of which the entire community will be proud. We will work hand in hand with the school system, government, service organizations, and community groups to ensure that your new library has a positive impact on your family, your neighbor’s family, and every member of our Roe Jan community.

We hope to break ground on the new library by the end of 2008.
