The
proposed 7,500-square-foot building will be a one-story, environmentally
conscientious project built on 9+ acres on Route 22, just north of the old
Roe Jan School. The space will be filled with natural light and provide
westward views toward the Audubon and other preservation lands.
We are very happy to have been accepted into the New York State Energy
Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) new construction program that
supports “green” building. Your new library will be built using local materials
and blend into the gorgeous landscape of Columbia County.
The structure will be built low on the site, conforming to Copake's Scenic
Corridor Overlay Zoning. The new facility will have space for a collection
of up to 40,000 items, with state-of-the-art computers and room for children
to read and play. There will be a community room that can be opened
independently of the library and plenty of space for picnicking and myriad
other outdoor activities. The new facility will give residents of
Ancram, Copake, and Hillsdale a true community
library to enjoy for generations to come.
This dream is not so distant; it is within our grasp!

Your new library will be a beautiful and functional
“green” building
of which the entire community will be proud. We will work
hand in hand with the school system, government, service
organizations, and community groups to ensure that your new
library has a positive impact on your family, your
neighbor’s family, and every member of our Roe Jan
community.
We hope to break ground on the new library by the end of 2008.
