Guidelines for Using the Public Access Computers
You must sign the logbook when you use a computer, giving your name, the date
and the time you begin using the computer. Parents/Guardians of children under
18 must sign and date the Limitation of Liability agreement.
No more than three people may be at a computer at a time, since our space is
very limited.
Use of a computer is on a first-come, first-served basis. Those using a
computer will not have a time limit assigned, but agree, as a condition of use,
that if anyone else is waiting, they will make the computer available within 15
minutes of being informed by Library staff that another person is waiting.
Computers are turned off 15 minutes before closing time.
You are not allowed to leave any software (programs) or data files on a
Library computer’s hard drives. Any file you inadvertently leave on a hard
drive will be deleted, and the drive will be restored to its original
configuration.
You may not use your own software (programs) on a Library computer. Data you
bring in on a diskette may be used only after the diskette has been checked by
an anti-virus program. This will help prevent computer viruses that commonly
invade public computers.
If you wish to save or download files, you must purchase diskettes from the
Library. The cost is seventy cents ($.70) per diskette. You may not use your own
diskettes. This policy is designed to minimize the potential for the
introduction of a virus.
You may print two (2) sheets of paper free of charge. Additional copies cost
twenty cents ($.20) each.
Warning:
Although a virus checker is used in the public access computers, this checker
will not completely protect you from the chance of loading a virus on your
diskette. Software downloaded from the Internet may contain a virus so you need
to have virus-checking software on your own computer. The Roeliff Jansen
Community
Library is not responsible for damage to a patron’s disk or computer, or for
any loss of data, any damage or any liability that may occur from patron use of
a Library computer. Any damages to the computer or its peripheral devices will
result in the responsible person being denied further access. The Library
expects the person responsible to pay for damage to the computer.
Internet Access Policy
All Internet resources accessible through the Library are provided equally to
all Library users. The Roeliff Jansen Community Library does not censor your access to
materials or protect you from information you may find offensive. Parents or
guardians of children under 18, not the Library staff, are
responsible for the Internet information selected and/or accessed by their
children. Parents/guardians – and only parents/guardians – may restrict
their children – and only their children – from access to Internet resources
via a Library computer. Parents/guardians are advised to supervise their
children’s Internet sessions and sign the Limitation of Liability
agreement if the child is under age 18.
Internet services may be used only for legal purposes. Use of these services
in violation of any local, state, or federal regulation or applicable court
decision is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, any use of the
Internet for commercial or for-profit purposes, product, advertisement,
political lobbying and unauthorized copying of copyright-protected material.
Access to the Internet via a Library computer is intended primarily to
provide an information resource. You may send or receive electronic mail using
the Library’s Internet access computer. However, any mail that has not been
picked up within three days of receipt will be deleted.
The Internet, as an information resource, enables the Library to provide
information beyond the confines of its own collection. It allows access to
ideas, information and commentary from around the globe. Currently, however, it
is an unregulated medium. As such, while the Internet offers access to a wealth
of material that is personally, professionally and culturally enriching to
individuals of all ages, it also enables access to some material that may be
offensive, disturbing and/or illegal. The Hillsdale Public Library does not
monitor, and has no control over, the information accessed through the Internet
and is not responsible for its content.
Information obtained from the Internet may be reliable and current or it may
be out-of-date. Some information you would like may not be available at times.
You must evaluate the information yourself.
Failure to comply with our policy regarding use of the Internet will result
in the loss if Internet access privileges.
Guidelines for Using the Multi-Media Computer –
Jump Start System
The Multi-Media system is designed for use by children age 3 through 7.
Children and adults should use the system together. Children who wish to use the
computer for the first time should have a training session. Only library
software may be used.
Children must sign up on the clipboard by the computer before using the
system and will be limited to fifteen (15) minute time slots if the computer is
in demand.
Children may reserve computer time by signing up on the reserve sheet at the
circulation desk. Being five (5) minutes late for reserved time will result in
forfeiture of that reserved time.
Children may use the computer’s printer to print two (2) copies at no
charge. Additional copies cost twenty cents ($.20) each.
The computer is available for use at all times the library is open until 15
minutes before closing. Failure to comply with our Library policy regarding
public computers will result in the loss of your computer access privileges.
Staff Assistance
Most Library staff are volunteers, and none is an expert on the Library
computers or Internet. Library staff can show you how to initially access the
Internet but are limited in the amount of help they can give you in learning how
to use it.
Current books and periodicals on the Internet are available in the Library’s
collection. Have fun exploring the Internet but please remember that many times
you will find the specific information you need right here…in our books,
periodicals, encyclopedia, etc.
All persons using Roeliff Jansen Library computers and having Internet
access must sign the following Limitation of Liability.
For persons under age 18 the consent of a parent or guardian is required, by
signature on the following.
